Connecting with industry influencers however, can catapult your business in a very short period of time. Getting to know the movers-and-shakers can cut your learning curve drastically. Why not learn from the best? If you want to be successful, hang around those with achievement.

Industry Influencers, Who Are They?

They are generally those with the largest tribe and a huge social media presence – not always, but typically true.  Industry Influencers may write a blog with thousands of followers, who are live and participating. Perhaps they have written a book or create lots of videos. They may even have a steady stream of products, services and promotions. The determining factor is: Industry Influencers have an engaged, loyal, brand following.

Industry Influencers are the leaders of the pack. They are the shot-callers, trend-setters and culture creators.

The small thinking entrepreneur may see the Industry Influencer as competition. However, as an Industry Influencer in the making, you have to think bigger. Your vision is to be where they are so,,, they are not the enemy. Use them a life lesson board. They are the teacher, the adviser and mentor – even if it’s initially from a distance. Their mistakes are your lessons. Their success is your grand lesson.

If you are fortunate enough to connect with the Industry Influencer in your niche, you are ahead of the game by tenfold. You can learn valuable trade secrets only available to the experienced.  Industry Influencers always have a strong brand presence and a 5-star reputation to match. As someone who is connected, you have the liberty of borrowing from each.

Your Industry Influencers grant you with both credibility and authority, just by association.

The Industry Influencer’s brand equity serves to strengthen your brand, your following and your sales. They are an asset, not your competition…at least not just yet.

Attracting Industry Influencers

Your first order of business to walk among the super-successful is to always strive for and achieve excellence. You must present as dynamic, engaging and trustworthy. You obviously haven’t achieved the level of success of the Industry Influencer  but you should certainly appear to have the ability to do so at some point. If you are unable to demonstrate your ability to move in their circles, why would they waste time to let you inside?

In order to be accepted in a tribe, you have to resemble the members.

You must always present your authentic self. It is critical that you are transparent and exemplify the highest standard of integrity. The Industry Influencer and their followers must trust that you are like them. They must accept you into the tribe because they believe you belong.

Tip: Play your position with the Industry Influencer, don’t make moves like you are on the A-list. You can’t walk in and try to take over the tribe. Remember, no one likes or appreciates a know-it-all.

Getting Into the Realm of Industry Influencers

What is the best way to get someone to like you? This was true in middle school and it is equally as true in the adult world. You get someone to like you by first demonstrating that you like them. Get the attention of the influential, by giving them attention. Subscribe to their blog, follow them on social media and join their membership site. Whenever  you can effectively,  share a thoughtful commentary. Share, like and comment on their posts. Tell them what a great idea that was, tell them their kids are cute and laugh at all their jokes. Yes, for right now, you are the Ed McMahon and they are Johnny Carson.

Industry InfluencerConsider sharing the best of who you are with the Industry Influencer. Make them know who you are by sharing your products or services. The best way to build rapport with anyone is to show them what you have in common. Since you are in the same industry, send them a copy of your book or whitepaper. Share your videos and ask them about what they thought of your latest blog post.

Show the Industry Influencer your value and build a relationship based on comrade.

Tip: A sure fire way to get the Industry Leader to appreciate you – ask them to be a featured guest on your webinar. Request they write a forward in your next book. Who could resist a raving fan who wants to show honor and respect to the market leader and trendsetter.

At this stage in the game, you must play Gayle because there can be only one Oprah in the room at time. Gayle is no slouch and she has talent in her own right, so sit tight and your moment of influence will come.

Solidify Your Position

Your first order of business in maintaining the attraction of the Industry Influencer is to establish your value to them and their tribe. Be clear about what you bring to the table. Be confident and assertive about your knowledge and skill-set. Share your insight and expertise when appropriate. Let it be known that you are no slouch. You are a valuable asset and you too have a lot to offer.

Stay true to your dream, hone your craft and become an expert in your field…before long you are the exemplary of success for the next generation entering the field. You will get your turn as Industry Influencer if you are persistent and determined to be successful. Don’t give up, stay faithful and know your time will come…and when it does, others will try desperately to win you over. Sit back and enjoy the praise.
