How Your Influence Can Secure Your Seat at the Big Table

As soon as I saw this video on Facebook™ I thought what if every child could get this powerful lesson about influence like this. Many of us growing up didn’t really fully understand the significance of influence and how it impacts our lives. How we influence others and our environment as well as how others and the environment influences us.

Think about influence for a moment think about how many people and things you influence us on a daily basis. Do you greet your employees with a smile and tell them what a good job they are doing; and how happy you are to have them on your team. Wow! Imagine that influence. In what ways do think your comment could impact that team member’s day? For one, they will more likely identify as a team member vs an employee – at least in those moments. In the end, when you consistently, positively influence your team, they buy into your dream. Valued employees become brand ambassadors. They are loyal and strive to be more productive. Collectively, the entire organization gets better because everyone involved is attached to the positive outcomes.

When I Googled™  influence, is the definition I get:

What is Influence? The Simplistic View

No matter how many times I ask, I find that people have a general notion of what influence is, but can’t define it precisely. So let me start with two relevant definitions from the Webster’s dictionary.

Influence is:

  • The act or power of producing an effect without apparent exertion of force or direct exercise of command
  • The power or capacity of causing an effect in indirect or intangible ways : sway

 

From these definitions, it is clear that influence is something that must have some effects on something else. The question is what those “effects” are, and what that “something else” is.

In your business  that “something” is almost always going to be a person, or a group of people. I will refer to these people as the “Influencees”.

As a business owner, (this includes solo professionals, authors, creatives, freelancers etc – you are your business) the effects, on the other hand, can change a thought (i.e. sentiment, opinion, attitude, etc.) or it could cause an action (i.e. purchase, referral, behavior change, such as loyalty, etc.).

As an Industry Influencer, your objective is to enhance  the opinion that your target market has about your brand. When creating brand awareness you expect them to become familiar with you. Your marketing communication’s goal is to positively influence your prospect’s feelings about your offer. Your desire is to translate this effect into a sale or signed contract.

Ultimately, Industry Influencer you want to position yourself as a leader in the market place. You want to be out front dictating trends and ahead of the curve. Your goal is to influence your target market, specifically your ideal buyer and further, to have an impact in your niche.

Take your seat at the big table, take the lead and become a world-changer. 

Hope you enjoyed this cute little boy who is taking command of his audience. He is ahead of the curve because he has already gotten the lesson of cause and effect. He understands, in that moment, he had influence over that crowd. I wonder what he will try to influence next. Perhaps convincing his mother to cancel his nap time. 🙂
